The January 18, 1993 'Leader' printed a picture of Hamish McDonald and Chris Isaac looking at the fallen tree; the view was similar to this one the following information comes from the article.
The over-80-year-old redwood was on a Chatsworth Road property owned by a Stokes Valley resident, a Mr Thorstenson. It was thought that it was being removed to make room for a house on the section.
The tree was in a residential conservation zone, and because its trunk was over 20 cm diameter it was illegal to cut it down without council permission. If prosecuted under the Resource Management Act, the owner could face a 2-year gaol sentence or a fine of up to $200 000. By the time the article was written the tree was believed to have been cut into firewood.
Mr Thorstenson would not be prosecuted; he was willing to provide $300 worth of native trees to be planted on this and other sites.Date Taken8th January 1993
