Brian had lived in Trentham during World War II.
As a newsboy, he had legal access to the camp, and could scour it for bottles, which he sold to a dealer 'in cartloads'. Children would also carry soldiers' kitbags - for a price.
He also helped players at Heretaunga golf course.

Brian and his wife Vera took over the Akatarawa store in 1958.
