Tom had been appointed to the council in 1977, and had been deputy chairman from 1980.
He had owned the local Ford dealership, Tom Croft Motors.
He had been national president of the NZ Chamber of Commerce,1976 (elected to national executive May 1972), president and life member of the Upper Hutt Chamber, and charter present of the Heretaunga Rotary Club.
He had been a founder/director of Wellington Capital Private radio; subsequently named Radio Windy, and then The Breeze.
