DescriptionPrinted in greyscale in the ‘Leader’ on May 14, 1997, with an obituary. The April 23 'Leader' had reported his death in a collision with a truck north of Taupo on April 16. His wife was injured, and the funeral was delayed while she recovered.
He had been with Medic Alert since 1980, and the international foundation's president had presented him with an International Voluntary Medic Alert Award in October 1989 during a visit where he was learning about the New Zealand computer system and database. John had received a President's Award a few years earlier.
At the time of his death he as also chairman of the Central Region Economic development Board, a Central Institute of Technology Council member, and an executive member of the Upper Hutt Chamber of Commerce. Former posts included New Zealand Travel Commissioner in London, deputy chairman of the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute, board member of the Tourist Hotel Corporation, chairman of the New Zealand chapter of the Pacific Asia Travel Association and first executive director of the Upper Hutt Promotion and Development Board, and chairman of the Wellington Regional Chambers of Commerce (1985).
He had been a Justice of the Peace since 1978, and had been awarded an MBE in 1990.
Speakers at the funeral included the Minister of Tourism, Rob Talbot, and the mayor, Rex Kirton.
