An earlier picture of the project with electronics lecturer Peter Thomas was printed in greyscale in the ‘Leader’ on December 11, 1996.
The boat was solar-powered, and the aim was to sail it from Wellington to Queensland in 1997. It would be competing with others from Russia and Australia.
The project was first mentioned in the 'Leader' on March 21, 1994. A competition had been arranged by CIT and James Cook University, Townsville, and was scheduled for November 1996; the boats must not have sails.
This picture shows the finished 4-metre Solar Electric Research Vessel 'Goodwill' being tested by the wave machine in the Leisure Centre (later H2O Xtream) pool. By this stage, the only remaining competitor, from Townsville University, had 'floundered'.
The February 17, 1999 'Leader' reported the boat as self-righting and self-guiding, using GPS; it had recently been filmed at Eastbourne by the BBC for its 'Tomorrow's World' programme. Mr Thomas was seeking a partner so that a pre-production model could be made; $400 000 would be needed.
