The Upper Hutt Co-operating Parish had paid his stipend for work he had done at CIT for the past eight years. The CIT Chaplaincy Trust Board was asking the community to meet the $15 000 cost of having a chaplain on campus for a third of a year. The CIT Council had donated $200 and made an office available.
The trust was hoping to eventually have a full-time stipendiary chaplain.
Mr Knipe exchanged parishes in 1989; St Andrew's Centre, Upper Hutt, for Cooperstown, New York.
He was introduced in a January 20, 1981 'Leader' article.
He had come from Ranfurly, Central Otago, in February 1982, and had been appointed to the Upper Hutt Co-operating Parish, joining the Reverend Graeme McIver and the Reverend John Howell; he would have major responsibility for St Andrew's church, and it was expected that he would be able to serve as part-time ecumenical chaplain to CIT.
Married with a family; former experience in Papua New Guinea, and in parish, armed services and industrial work.
