The track was laid out byAlf McCarthy, who had been at Trentham since 1936; he was assisted by Mr J S Watson of Melbourne, who had designed a similar course for Mornington, in South Australia. Running rails, if installed, would make it difficult for the ambulance mandatory in jumping races to follow the field. Horses would have to change feet as turns changed direction. There had not been a water jump for sixty years; it would be crossed twice in the 4800-metre Wellington Steeplechase.
