An Akatarawa Sawmilling Company truck (1948 International KB5 Model) full of timber is parked in front of the Bank.

This building opened in August 1929 had been renamed Australia and New Zealand Bank Limited and extended before it was demolished early-April 1978 to clear the site to enable the construction of new premises for the Bank, which by then had become the ANZ Bank.

The April 11, 1978 'Leader' printed a picture of the demolition, which had started the previous week.

The January 29, 1980 'Leader' printed articles on a new building, which was to open on February 4. Details of the earlier building; site cost £1100; contract for £4275 let to George Mason, who completed it in 35 weeks, on December 21, at a total cost of £4356/5/6.
The 3-bay extension and other changes had been estimated at £12 500, but a December tender for £17 849 from G W Bennett Limited was accepted according to the article, extensions to the grounc floor began on February 1, 1954, and took 40 weeks; total cost was £19 112/0/4.
The bank moved into Astral Towers on May 23, 1977, after 48 years in this building. The new ANZ bank opened in 1978 (? The 'April 1978 demolition article expected the process to take 18 months).

This image is identified as R13 in Vin Benge's oral history interview about the Leo Morel photos of Main Street.

The clock was a town clock, or became one; it commemorated the 1940 centennial. When the bank was demolished, the clock was mounted on a column; the November 30, 1982 'Leader' picture showed it being lifted off for repairs; it had lost hands on one side, and had become erratic.Date TakenJan. 1948Geotagnot specified
